About University of Akron
The University of Akron is a public university in Akron, OH, the county seat of Summit County, and according to Newsweek magazine (2001), one of nine `High-Tech Havens`. The city was founded in 1825 and soon became a significant manufacturing center, also being considered the 5th largest city in Ohio and the 81st largest one in USA, with a population of more than 217 000 inhabitants (2000).
The University first started under the name of Buchtel College, being named this way in honor of John R. Buchtel, in 1870, who was a prominent Ohio businessman and a philanthropist, being moved to its present location in Akron, in 1913.
Over the years, the University of Akron grew, having today an enrollment estimated at a number of nearly 30 000 students, from more than 40 U.S. states and approximately 80 different countries, offering more than 200 undergraduate and 100 graduate majors, the best known program of the university being the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
The athletic teams from University of Akron are known as the Akron Zips, which compete in sports such as soccer and basketball, as well as cross country and indoor track. The Akron Zips soccer team were ranked number one throughout the 2009 season, making it to the NCAA Men's Division I Soccer Championship, being the 1st team in UA history to be ranked number one in any sport.
